Watch out Silicon Valley.  South Florida is determined to creep up on your turf.

A Miami-based company is helping start-ups fund and grow technology businesses in South Florida.

"All the condos are 90 percent occupied now, so we have a bunch of young people living in downtown. We have to get jobs for them and they're all interested in technology," said Marc Billings of Incubate Miami.

The organization is funded in part by the DDA, Miami Dade County and the federal governmnet.

"The basic premise is that we take young companies and try to help them get nurtured and really get the right advice, funding and mentorship," said Billings.

It works a lot like the TV show Shark Tank.

Start-up business owners make their pitch. In Andrea Fuentes' case it's a social media style cooking application.

"It's real-time livestream so I could be cooking along with you and five of your friends," said Fuentes.

Incubate Miami decides if it wants to fund them and help the business grow.

"What we give them is a range between $25,000 to $50,000 to get started and about six months in our office space in Miami," said Billings.

He said he feels downtown Miami is the perfect spot for technology companies to create jobs and thrive.

"Downtown Miami is the place that has the urban density and the urban hipness to turn around and be the grit and grime of Miami and that's what we think it takes," said Billings.
